Grow 100 Pounds of Potatoes in Just 4 Square Feet: A Simple Guide to Maximizing Your Harvest

Growing potatoes in a small space can be an easy and fun project for anyone interested in gardening. With the right materials and a little bit of effort, you can grow up to 100 pounds of potatoes in just four square feet! In this post, we will explain how to do it step by step.

Materials needed:

  • Six 2″x6″ boards eight feet long
  • One 2″x2″ lumber 12 feet long
  • 2-1/2″ wood screws

Lumber can be any wood, but cedar or redwood will provide better resistance to rot and will last much longer.

Step 1: Cut the 2×2 board into four lengths of 33 inches.

Step 2: Cut the 2×6 boards into 12 lengths of 21 inches and 12 lengths of 24 inches.

Step 3: Pre-drill screw holes in the 2×6 boards and attach the bottom row on the 2x2s.

To do this, place the four 33-inch 2x2s parallel to each other and screw one 21-inch 2×6 board on each end. Then, screw the remaining four 21-inch 2×6 boards evenly spaced between the two ends. Finally, screw one 24-inch 2×6 board on each side to complete the box.

Step 4: Place over prepared soil and fill with soft soil or mulch, planting potatoes four inches deep.

Choose a sunny spot in your garden and prepare the soil by removing any weeds and loosening the soil. Place the box over the prepared soil and fill it with soft soil or mulch. Plant your potatoes four inches deep and cover them with soil.

Step 5: When the vines are about 12 inches tall, add another board and fill the dirt, being careful not to cover more than one third of the plant. Repeat this until the board is completed.

As your potato plants grow, they will start to sprout vines above the soil surface. When the vines reach about 12 inches tall, add another board on top of the box and fill it with soil. Be careful not to cover more than one-third of the plant to avoid damaging it. Repeat this process until you reach the top of the box.

Step 6: To harvest your potatoes, remove the screws from the bottom board and carefully reach in for the potatoes. Replace the soil and boards. Next time you need potatoes, remove the second board from the bottom and remove spuds from that level. And so on.

When your potato plants are ready to be harvested, unscrew the bottom board and carefully reach in to collect your potatoes. Replace the soil and boards to continue growing more potatoes. When you need more potatoes in the future, unscrew the second board from the bottom and repeat the process.

In conclusion, growing potatoes in a small space is an easy and rewarding project that anyone can do. By following these simple steps and using the right materials, you can grow up to 100 pounds of potatoes in a minimal amount of space!
